Coastal Landscape Design

We were first approached by the owners of this property to cost out their own design for the front and back yard and happily did so. Through the costing process it became clear that while their design had strong merits, some investment in a professionally considered design would inevitably stretch their dollar further, and hopefully towards a more pleasing end (well… we do have a lot of experience in this field).

We put this idea to our client with their costings and, after discussing some of our ideas for their property, we were asked to review their design for them. By exploring the design process themselves they had consolidated their requirements for the property quite a lot and all that was left for us to do was make them fit into a beautiful and functional design. In doing this we did feel that certain elements of their design should be altered and upon presentation of the final design our clients whole heartedly embraced these changes and we started talking construction.

For the front yard we envisioned a timber boardwalk in three separate sections with the middle being a ‘bridge’ over a drifting grassed gully. For the bridge, large recycled timbers were used to compliment the iron bark decking timbers that made up the rest of the boardwalk. Large rocks were placed to give the gully definition and structure while the plantings are used to enhance the ‘forest walk’ experience. A differently textured band of concrete follows the drift across the driveway linking the gully and breaking up the necessary expanse of concrete. This part of the garden is designed to help wash off the cares of the day and promote a sense of arrival on getting home.

Functional stepping stones were laid down both sides as informal access to the back yard.  On the blind side we had the room to incorporate some large fern plantings to add visible splendour for the internal spaces and a natural cooling effect for the home. The rear yard (not yet under construction) has been designed to incorporate an extension to the existing deck as well as a level lawn area and cubby house for playtime and adventures. Carefully placed plantings separate the areas as well as providing privacy and screening for the necessary utility areas.

This fantastic project began with a great client that had put a lot of thought and effort into the design process. They now get to reap the rewards of their hard work and the benefits of allowing us in to assist.
